How to Make Your Home a Low-EMF Haven

Radiation from electromagnetic fields (EMFs) comes from your wifi, laptop, cell phone, microwave, and any other wireless technology you have in your home.

Public concerns about EMFs have risen over the past few decades, because a strong correlation has been shown between EMF exposure and the development of cancer (all types).

Additionally, some people with chronic illness find their symptoms drastically worsen with exposure to EMFs, a phenomenon called Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity.

Dietrich Kinghardt, MD, notes that mold has been shown to produce 600 times more mycotoxins in the presence of EMFs. Something people suffering from mold toxicity cannot take lightly.

With the growing evidence we have available, scores of health-conscious people are developing an interest in reducing EMF exposure.

But how can you reduce your exposure? EMFs are everywhere. Literally.

Let’s discuss a few simple ways you can make your home a low-EMF environment.

1. Switch to Ethernet

Wifi spreads electromagnetic fields throughout your house in order to provide an internet signal to nearby devices.

Thankfully, you don’t need to give up internet altogether to reduce your exposure. Switching to old-fashioned wired internet does the job nicely.

You’ll need

  1. The router and/or modem your internet provider set up for you (Comporium, Spectrum, Windstream, etc.)
  2. The short ethernet cable that came with your router and/or modem
  3. A long, shielded ethernet cable like this one
  4. A grounding adapter like this one
  5. Two ethernet cables and one adapter for each additional device you need to connect to your router and/or modem

Start by plugging your short ethernet cable into your router/modem and connect the other end to the grounding adapter. Then, plug the grounding adapter into the wall. Connect your long, shielded ethernet cable to the other end of your grounding adapter. Lastly, plug the other end of your long cable into your device.

You now have a grounded and shielded ethernet connection.

On the bottom of your router/modem in small print, you’ll find the URL where you can turn wifi off. Make sure your laptop or computer is connected to ethernet, and then open the URL in your internet browser of choice. From the page that opens, turn off the router/modem wifi.

Now, your router/modem will not be emitting wifi and your internet connection will be solely through the grounded and shielded ethernet cable(s).

Be sure to turn wifi off on your cell phone(s) and laptop(s), so they aren’t searching for a signal that isn’t there.

Now that you have a low-EMF device, the more you can use it instead of other electronic devices, the better. For example, Jonathan and I don’t have a TV. Instead, whenever we want to watch a movie, we watch it on our laptop.

2. Reduce Cell Phone Usage

For extremely sensitive individuals, the more you can keep your cell phone on airplane mode, the better. Reserving it for emergencies instead of using it to stay connected all day long will significantly reduce EMF exposure from your cell phone.

If you’re not quite so sensitive, you can reduce EMF exposure from your cell phone by texting instead of calling and talking on speakerphone instead of holding the phone against your head during a phone call.

It also helps to use your ethernet-connected device instead of your cell phone, whenever you can.

While you’re sleeping, you can achieve the greatest EMF reduction by turning your cell phone off or turning it on airplane mode.

If that doesn’t work for you, try turning off data and bluetooth and keeping the phone on the other side of your bedroom, or in another room entirely.

3. Get Rid of Your Microwave

I’m not going to lie. It took Jonathan and me a long time to bite the bullet and ditch our microwave.

Even if you don’t cook with your microwave, it’s so convenient for heating up leftovers or warming a hot compress.

A few essential tools helped us get rid of our microwave for good.
  1. A plug-in heating pad for the head, neck, and shoulders
  2. An Instant Pot to make convenient meals
  3. A toaster oven to quickly warm up leftovers (find the smaller version here)
  4. Boiling water on the stove in a saucepan or kettle
  5. Heating leftover soup, stew, and pasta on the stove. Simply add 1/4 inch of water to a small to medium saucepan to prevent sticking/burning. Then, add your leftovers, cover with a lid, and heat on medium, stirring once the food is warm.

A Quick Mention of Earthing

Some people find that taking a few minutes to swim or stand barefoot outside helps restore their natural electric frequency and relieve symptoms of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity. Read more about earthing here.
