...so what's with all the hype about natural medicine?

Autoimmune disease affects approximately 8% of the population.

This category of chronic illness includes conditions like Ankylosing Spondylitis, Celiac Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Late Stage Lyme Disease & Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, Endometriosis, Fibromyalgia, Grave’s Disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Narcolepsy, Psoriasis, Reactive Arthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogren’s Syndrome, and Ulcerative Colitis.

That means at least 613,920,000 people worldwide (and maybe you or a loved one) experience –

  • Reduced quality of life
  • Difficulty keeping up with the demands of school, work, family life, and other obligations
  • Lack of compassion and understanding from medical providers
  • A long wait before receiving the right diagnosis
  • Disappointment with the lack of medical treatment options available for autoimmune disease and other similar types of chronic illness

The good news is, there is hope.

The development of autoimmune disease is strongly linked to –

  • Genetic factors
  • Toxins and environmental triggers
  • Mucosal immunity (ie. intestinal barrier compromise)
  • Dysbiosis of the gut microbiome
  • Poor nutrition
  • Bacterial and viral infections
  • Chronic stress

These factors combined lead to systemic inflammation and immune system overload.

That’s where natural, also known as naturopathic, medicine can help.

Naturopathic medicine involves –

  • Using diagnostic tools such as health history, symptoms, and lab work to get to the root cause of a person’s disease state.

  • Nutrition – eating to reduce inflammation, lower toxicity, heal the gut, honor the body’s hunger and satiety cues, increase longevity, and provide optimal nutrition.

  • Nutritional supplements and herbal medicine – to help modulate the immune system, protect & repair damaged organs of the body, reduce inflammation, and lower toxicity.

  • Exercise – as tolerated, to increase the function of the body, balance neurotransmitters, and lower toxicity.

  • Stress reduction and sleep – to increase mental & physical wellbeing, balance neurotransmitters, and give the body optimal support for healing.

  • Bodywork – healing modalities like physical therapy, rehabilitation, massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic to help the systems of the body function at their best.

*Lowering toxicity is not “magic”Some companies, though, are gimmicky and try to claim that only their “proprietary” supplements can help your body detox effectively. Your body detoxifies itself, but that doesn’t mean these processes never benefit from support. True detoxification support can be achieved through reducing the use of food, household items, and beauty products that contain toxic additives; improving any of the body’s detox mechanisms that aren’t functioning optimally, taking binders, and supporting genetic detoxification genes that may be weakened by common mutations.

Through naturopathic medicine, my husband and I have been able to make healing progress on multiple chronic illnesses. We’ve achieved a quality of life that when we were at our worst, we did not think could ever be possible. You can read our story here.

That’s why I decided to become a Holistic Nutritionist, Clinical Herbalist, and Health Coach – to help other people like us with autoimmune diseases and similar chronic illnesses get to the root of their health conditions and restore their quality of life through naturopathic modalities.

That’s also why I started this health blog, Naturally at Home – as a free resource to others who have multiple chronic conditions and don’t know where to turn for help.

In my posts, you’ll learn about:

  • Up-to-date, thorough research about under-taught, under-diagnosed, and under-treated chronic illnesses

  • Evidenced-based remedies involving complementary and alternative medicine that can help your body heal itself

  • How to find the right health practitioner for you

  • How to help your body heal and live a nourishing lifestyle when you have limited resources

Vegan vs. Paleo for Autoimmune Disease – Which One Works Better?

The population of people with chronic illness and autoimmune disease do not always have expected reactions to healthy lifestyle choices that benefit the average person or population as whole. One person might experience near remission of their symptoms by following an Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) pattern of eating. Another person might feel severely ill on AIP, but thrive eating a vegan diet with a daily green smoothie. This can be extremely frustrating and confusing when you’re trying to figure out a way of eating that works for you. The goal of this post is to help work through the confusion.

How to Support a Loved One with a Chronic Illness

When navigating how to support a loved one with a chronic illness, your gut instinct is probably going to be a strong desire to “fix” the problem. Especially if you’re in a caregiver position. I mean, who wants to helplessly watch their loved one suffer? Because “fixing” chronic illness is not really possible in the traditional sense and treating it is nowhere near straightforward, things get complicated.
